Dear Oreon Community,
We’re thrilled to share exciting news about the upcoming release of Oreon 10, codenamed “Foxy.” This major version brings significant enhancements, including a fundamental shift in our base distribution and a renewed focus on package management.
Base Distribution Transition
Oreon 10 will transition its base from AlmaLinux to a full RHEL clone, leveraging the Centos Stream source code. This strategic move empowers our team with better control over packages and updates. Here’s why it matters:
- Enhanced Package Management: By hosting all packages directly on our infrastructure at oreonproject, we ensure streamlined management and faster updates.
- Buildsystem Integration: Our new buildsystem will orchestrate package builds, ensuring consistency and reliability across the entire ecosystem.
Source Code and Domain Changes
We’re making significant changes to where our source code resides and how we host updates and packages:
- Domain Shift: The current packages.boostyconnect.com (BCPackage) domain will continue to serve Oreon Lime (R2) during its full support lifecycle. However, we’re excited to announce a new domain with a robust infrastructure for future releases.
- Source Code Migration: We’re moving away from Gitea and hosting our source code on our own infrastructure. Stay tuned for more details!
Expanding Package Portability
Oreon 10 aims to port over 1,000 packages (if not more) compared to standard RHEL derivatives. This expanded package library ensures that you have access to a rich ecosystem of software.
Keeping Packages Up to Date
Our commitment to keeping Oreon’s packages current extends to all components, including the kernel. Thanks to our buildsystem, you’ll receive timely updates and security patches.
