We’ve worked as a team to get this version out to everyone.
Oreon 10 may not bring much to the table yet, but we are planning to push more and more packages to our repositories as time goes on. We are committing to providing more packages than upstream RHEL/AlmaLinux to make Oreon more suitable for desktop use. We will also finally start to follow upstream point releases to show that we aren’t lazy. Multiple packages from Fedora point releases will be ported over to Oreon 10 to improve things such as gaming.
Differences when compared to Oreon Lime (R2)
- Linux Kernel version changed from 5.14 to 6.11 (May be upgraded to 6.12 soon.)
- Base upgrade from AlmaLinux 9.3 to AlmaLinux 10 (Oreon 10 will also finally follow point releases from upstream)
- 3x the amount of packages when compared to Oreon Lime (R2) as of December 12, 2024
- Desktop environment changed from GNOME 40 to KDE Plasma 6
- Moved to mirrorlists to increase package installation/upgrade reliability and speed
- Switched from Anaconda GUI installer to Anaconda WebUI installer to improve installation ease
- Fully dropped Xorg desktop session (Wayland only)
- Mass package upgrades
Stuff coming in the near future
- Oreon System Manager, an open source QT application written in C++ that lets you manage system packages, repositories, and DistroBox + Docker containers.
- WINE32 support (coming in the next Oreon 10 build/update)
- Around or over 1,000 more packages than upstream
- Oreon Enterprise edition (This edition may or may not only be offered for a price as we are lacking funds right now)
- Oreon Server edition that ships without a desktop environment and can be used for custom installations or server use.
